Current Project

Bike n' Build
We are currently looking for volunteers to assist us at our first Bike n' Build event on August 9-10.

32 bicycle riders started in Boston on June 18th. and will end their cross-country trip in Santa Barbara on Aug 24th., stopping along the way here in Cottonwood to assist our affiliate! There are 6 cross country rides this summer, and our riders will assist at 10 building sites along the way.  These young people raised $4,000.00 to cover their personal expenses and additional funds to donate to causes like Habitat for Humanity. Thus far the group has raised over $140,000.00 through their grant program to will assist many housing concerns across our nation. The riders visiting Cottonwood will be treated to a pot luck dinner and Star Party at our host church on Aug 9th and (since we are between builds and do not have a house where they can work) then will then assist us at our ReStore on Aug 10.

We will be holding a "Meet and Greet" Spaghetti dinner fundraiser the evening of the 10th at Vinnie's Pizzaria in Cottonwood. This will be an opportunity to speak with the riders and learn of the great work these young people do annually to bring awareness across the US to the need for affordable housing.

How you can Help:
We are looking for assistance with packaged snacks, bottled drinks and water, as well as items we can use for the pot luck dinner, and photographers willing to catch all of the action on both days.

We are hoping for six $25.00 donations to pay for the riders spaghetti dinners.

If you wish to help but are otherwise committed, or if you don't like spaghetti or just wish to lend a hand, sponsor a rider table!  Send checks to Verde Valley Habitat for Humanity,  P.O. Box 2515, Cottonwood, AZ 86326. Note Bike n' Build on your memo line.

If you would be interested in assisting in any way , email me back or give us a call at 649-6788.

Verde Valley Habitat for Humanity - House #11

March 2010 House #11 Dedication

If you have been following our progress on House #11, you know that Colleen and her son Connor will be our next homeowner partners.  They are completing the process of earning “Sweat Equity” hours.  As of February 2010 they earned 375 of the 400 hours they must complete.  Colleen and Connor have now completed the 13 week “Financial Peace” series, and they have their down payment fund completed. They are preparing for the dedication of their home on March 21, 2010. They have an appointment with the Title Company to close on their home  the following week.

Colleen is an employee of the State of Arizona and assists the elderly members of our community with questions regarding Arizona low income medical programs. Connor attends Mingus Union High School. Colleen looks forward to becoming a first-time homeowner.  She says she was concerned about being a single working mom and finding enough time on weekends to complete the required sweat equity hours, but she found it much easier than she first thought.  Part of the homeownership process is learning to manage your money and your time and making wise decisions regarding the things that matter most to your family.

As previously noted in our donor/volunteer newsletters this  is the first foreclosure home our Habitat affiliate has purchased for rehabilitation. In December 2009 we were blessed with the opportunity to purchase a nearly new Townhome in Clarkdale, AZ for this family. This project required only a bit of TLC, scrubbing, painting and new flooring to be ready for the family.  Emails to current volunteers were sent out and eight weeks later we are nearly done with the project. While there were not as many volunteer hours needed, we were able to provide this home for $30,000.00 less than a standard brick and stick build. In other words it was a win/win for both the family and our affiliate.

As you read Colleen's story, we hope you will be moved to volunteer your time to help us prepare the site and build Colleen's new home. There is still plenty of time to get involved. It is a great stewardship opportunity for your faith-based or business organization.
