Verde Valley Habitat for Humanity - Committees

Site Selection Committee

The responsibility of the Verde Valley Habitat for Humanity Site Selection Committee is to locate and acquire inexpensive (or donated), buildable lots. Such opportunities exist-- it's often a question of finding land owners interested in making a donation, or selling at a reduced price.

Family Selection Committee

Great care is taken to assure that the organization selects appropriate candidates for Habitat housing. Though, unfortunately, there is no lack of local families in need, the Habitat family selection guidelines are intended to offer assistance to those families who are at or near the point of home-ownership readiness, but who are financially unable to meet the traditional mortgage requirements in today's real estate market. The Verde Valley Habitat for Humanity affiliate (chapter) must adhere not only to the Habitat for Humanity International rules, but must also comply with certain federal and state laws; such requirements impinge upon the family selection process.

Construction Committee

This committee is devoted to all aspects of actual home construction, from managing the logistics of material donations to coordinating volunteer efforts to collaborating with the selected families as they work off their "sweat equity" hours. Material donations must be acquired throughout the construction process, and interactions with local building code inspectors must be coordinated and streamlined.

Family Partnership Committee

Selected families may never have owned a house before being chosen as a Habitat homeowner. Family Partnership is Habitat's way of offering help to these new homeowners as they deal with the various responsibilities and problems of new home ownership. Providing financial counseling and home maintenance programs are an important part of our partnership program.

Publicity Committee

The more visible Verde Valley Habitat is in its constituent communities, the more successfully it can achieve its mission to provide affordable, decent housing to those in need. Publicity means getting the word out-- an ongoing effort requiring determination and perseverance. These efforts include a quarterly newsletter, website, PSAs and speaking engagements.

Fundraising Committee

Finding sources of funding to support our home-building efforts requires patience, savvy, persistence and creativity. One tool we use is the "Carpenters Club." Members make monthly donations of $10 or more. Building membership in the Carpenters Club will help Verde Valley Habitat with maintaining a better operating cash flow.

ReStore Committee

Schedules pick ups of items and coordinates delivery of items for sale to the Verde Valley HFH ReStore . We have recently moved and enlarged our retail location here in the Verde Valley to assist our community in quality gently used home improvement items. In 2005 we acquired a large truck to aide in our program. Volunteers are needed on Public and non public days to clean, sort and merchandise donations.
